Singapore's first seawater desalination plant, the largest of its type in the world. Costing $200M, it is the world's most energy efficient and largest membrane-based water treatment plant, removing salt by forcing seawater through a system of membranes. Hyflux is managed by chief executive Olivia Lum, who has came to be known as Singapore's 'Water Queen' for her talent in seizing business oppportunities to do with that most vital of commodities.
The plant will soon start drawing seawater, transforming it into fresh water, and pumping it into Singapore's potable water distribution system, producing 30 million gallons a day, or a tenth of the country's water needs.
